Abstract :
Using S-operator and point-matching techniques the linearly independent system of eigenmodes of an optical fibre with an arbitrary cross section is numerically constructed. The convergency of the method applied is examined. The general properties of radiation vector and scalar eigenmodes are analysed both analytically and numerically. Using the example of a circular fibre the range of validity of the scalar approximation is discussed
