Abstract
Current theoretical research on nonlinear intelligent multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) control systems such as those that control locomotion in humans and cats are reviewed. Optimal control theory is used to explain how these control systems work. Examples of work on specific movement tasks, jumping, pedaling a bicycle, maintaining posture, and walking are presented. Areas of further research that are of particular interest to specialists in systems and control are outlined.<>
