Abstract
A modulating capacity residential heat pump has been developed that uses microprocessors for all control functions. Built-in diagnostics and external service tools are an inherent part of the design. A field test program, as well as comparisons with a conventional heat pump, have been done. The design philosophy for the microprocessor-controlled heat pump and a summary of the field programs are given.
