Abstract :
Most electric motor failures in the petroleum and chemical industries are due to bearing problems. Considering the high cost of downtime in these continuous process plants, the need to increase motor reliability is pressing. The various factors affecting bearing life and the forces at work on them are discussed. Sample calculations to predict bearing life are given. Classes of bearings and factors affecting longer life are discussed as well as items of importance in maintenance.
