Abstract :
A novel composite fibre-semiconductor laser that can greatly alleviate the alignment complexities associated with the conventional pigtailed laser diode modules is presented. The laser has a threshold current density of 3 kA/cm2, emits evanescently into a singlemode side-polished optical fibre at 854 nm, and operates singlemode without any additional gratings.
