Abstract :
This article presents a theoretical simulation and analysis of all possible factors due to transient overvoltages (TOVs) that could contribute to electrical failures of electric submersible pump (ESP) motors used in oil fields. A transient calculations software package PSCAD is used to simulate a single cable-fed, 3.3-kV induction motor including the mains of the 33-kV distribution system. The factors studied are cable length, earthing resistance and parameters (insulation permittivity and permeability), opening time of CB and its location, switching via pre-insertion resistance, characteristics of the TVSS and its internal structure, and transformer connections and ratings
