Abstract :
This paper explores the effect of magnetoresistive (MR) head microtrack profile characteristics on the performance of embedded servo positioning systems using the MR element as the primary servo transducer. Specifically, we model the microtrack profiles of soft adjacent layer (SAL)-biased MR heads as trapezoids with unequal skirt widths and generate, through convolutions with written tracks, servo position error signals to quantify position and gain linearities. Trapezoid base width and asymmetry relate directly to MR stripe width and height. The effects of these parameters significantly influence position and gain linearities, affecting optimal servo performance
