Abstract :
The trend of using large electric machines as prime movers for mechanical loads is increasing in the process and pipeline industries. However, the use of a lirge electric motor requires extra effort to analyze starting methods under different limitations. Though different methods can be used to accelerate the electric motor on a "weak" network, the application of capacitor-reactor starting will be described. This starting method con produce adequate accelerating torque without exceeding the voltage dip specified by the electric utilities. A description is included of the actual starting of a 25 000-hp synchronous motor at the Dome Empress Plant with 359-MVA short circuit availability using a capacitor- reactor start, without exceeding a voltage dip of six percent on the electric utility system.
