Abstract
The development of phototubes is traced from early investigations of the nature of the photoelectric effect to the development of modern sensitized photosurfaces. The photoelectric properties of such surfaces are contrasted with those of pure metals. A discussion is given of the technical developments which have contributed to the importance of modern phototubes. A comprehensive bibliography covering both general and specific references on the subject of photoelectricity with emphasis on photoemissive surfaces is included.
