Abstract
History of the Army-Navy "E" Award: In 1906 the Navy instituted the "E" pennant as an award for excellence in gunnery, and later extended this to engineering and communications. Prior to Pearl Harbor the Navy gave the award to a few firms and organizations which showed excellence in producing ships, weapons and equipment for the Navy. Since Pearl Harbor, the Army and Navy have joined together in making the award to both plants and their employees, who working as a team and given "excellent" performance in winning the production battle and thus have proven their patriotism and grim determination to serve their country.
