Abstract
Operating and maintenance experiences with automated people-mover microprocessor-based train-control systems are discussed, using as examples those systems operating in airports in Atlanta, GA, Orlando, FL, and Gatwick, London, since 1980. Advantages of micro-processor control are shown, using the example of vehicle-door operation. Operating experiences are described, illustrating how human interaction with the people-mover system was used to enhance vehicle dynamics, improve stopping accuracy, and enhance voice and graphic-sign announcements. It is shown how experience gained on passenger information transfer led to a solution in the development of the Downtown Miami people-mover system, where a vast amount of messages was required. System diagnosis and maintenance was refined through field experience; maintenance-personnel training was improved; new test equipment was developed; and for the first time, the true power of the computer was realized.
