Abstract :
Methods are proposed for homogenizing and shimming a high homogeneity solenoid with a magnetic shield. The methods make the shield design more accurate and the shim coils less complicated. The whole-body 0.5 T superconducting MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) magnet is designed to achieve a field homogeneity of 3 ppm in a 50 cm DSV. Its fringe field is less than 0.5 mT outside a radius of 5 m using 12 tons of iron
