Abstract :
We describe a method that increases the accuracy and repeatability of optical extinction ratio measurements from presently several percent to better than one percent. This accuracy is required when optimizing the performance of Gb/s optical transmitters using lasers or modulators for ultra low bit error rates. The method is simple, and can be applied to both research and production measurements.<>
