Notable developments during 1989 are reviewed. They are the acceptance of the AT&T/Sun Microsystem´s version of Unix as the standard version, the sluggish progress of IBM/Microsoft´s OS/2 in the marketplace, the attempt by Microsoft and Apple Computer to replace the PostScript language in the Apple LaserWriter, and the persistence of viruses
