Abstract

Developments of note during 1989 are reviewed. Among them was the decision of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to revamp old equipment to bolster the air-traffic computer control system by installing in its Automated Radar Terminal Systems (ARTS 3) computers with solid-state memories that will increase processor capacity by as much as 20%. In other developments, the high-speed TGV Atlantique line opened in France; the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority ordered a rail car fleet with AC traction, which will be the first of its kind in the US; contracts were awarded for trains to serve the English Channel tunnel; and the advanced train-control system (ATCS), a series of modular subsystems that enables a railroad to control and locate its trains to within about a meter, continued to gain acceptance
