Abstract
Significant developments during 1989 are reviewed. The use of fiber optics to increase telecommunication capacity in the USSR is growing. In the area of lasers, a Soviet-Austrian venture is marketing Soviet lasers; the Soviets are testing hundreds of laser materials; and an excimer laser that excises bronchial blockages has been developed. Also noteworthy is that the USSR offers the world´s greatest menu of optical glasses.<>
