Abstract :
The authors report the observation of ultrafast all-optical switching in an integrated symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer using the nonresonant nonlinearity of Al0.18Ga0.82As below half the bandgap. A relative switching fraction or ~50% has been achieved using 10 ps pulses at a wavelength of 1.55 μm from a synchronously pumped modelocked colour-centre laser
