Abstract :
The N3 carrier system is a compandored 24-channel, single sideband system utilizing N -repeatered lines of existing design. This paper includes a general description of the system organization, a discussion of system features, and gives expected performance values as well as objectives of some significant system transmission parameters. Features of special interest include a common carrier supply, frequency-correction units to eliminate frequency shift introduced by the repeatered line, and automatic carrier alarm provisions. Incorporating modern solid-state circuit designs with liberal use of negative feedback, the newly developed N3 carrier terminal provides a new standard of short-haul performance capable of meeting today\´s intertoll transmission objectives.
