Abstract
A description is given of Aquarius, a $5.5 million, six-person underwater habitat submerged in September, 1987, in an underwater canyon just off St. Croix, one of the US Virgin Islands. Its autonomous life support system, and advanced sensing and data-handling capability are discussed. The construction of the habitat and the fine-tuning of its communication system are examined.<>
