Abstract
Arc motion due to self-magnetic fields is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Using an array of four Hall probes 90° apart around a vacuum breaker, we unambiguously determine arc rotation. It is primarily the radio component of magnetic induction that causes this motion. For a particular vacuum breaker design we find that arc rotation is a sensitive function of gap spacing and arc current. (Abstract provided by Editor.)
