Abstract
The author makes use of his experience in developing the DUCT CADCAM system at the University of Cambridge and as partner in the firm of Weber CAM GmbH, which programs for the pattern- and mould-making shop Firma August Weber Modellbau in Hildesheim, Germany. He discusses why CADCAM is so little used in the mechanical engineering industry and why designers use CAD systems with little understanding of CAM. Until design and manufacturing directors have a common policy, progress will remain slow
