Abstract
One of the limitations on the achievable data rate of soliton lightwave systems at fixed distance, or on the achievable distance at a fixed data rate, is a timing jitter that is caused by the interaction of the soliton pulses with spontaneous emission noise. An elementary derivation of the Gordon-Haus effect that does not require prior knowledge of any of the more advanced concepts used in the original derivation is presented
