Abstract :
The ZEUS Calorimeter Group has constructed both lead and uranium scintillator sampling calorimeters. The response of the calorimeters to electrons and pions has been studied. Hadronic resolution is shown to be best when the ratio of response of electrons and pions is unity. Such a calorimeter is said to compensate. A lead test calorimeter has been shown to compensate and to give a hadronic energy resolution of 44%/√E. The ZEUS prototype calorimeter, which has uranium as an absorber, also compensates. Its hadronic energy resolution is 35%/√E
