Abstract :
A novel implementation of the FASTBUS protocol, the Cluster Segment, is presented. The Cluster Segment is implemented using standard single-ended ECL (emitter-coupled logic) on twisted-pair cable rather than differential current drivers. The major advantages of the Cluster Segment are that it is substantially less expensive, it preserves the complete FASTBUS protocol, and it can be easily upgraded to the existing Cable Segment of future segment implementations. Examples of the Cluster Segment interface and test results are presented
