Abstract :
A scheme for detecting low-intensity images with a CCD (charge coupled device) camera is described in which successive images are digitized at fast frame rates and averaged to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. The results demonstrate that a dynamic range in excess of 10000:1 can be obtained using an uncooled device and averaging times of 100 s, a sensitivity comparable to that obtained with cooled devices. The technique is illustrated by imaging the weak fluorescence produced by an ethidium bromide stained DNA electrophoresis gel
