Abstract :
The authors constructed and tested a prototype digital readout system for optical spark chambers using a linear, solid-state charge-coupled detector array. Position resolution of 0.013 mm (σ) over a 25-cm field of view has been demonstrated. It is concluded that this technique should permit the construction of economical, lightweight and low-power trajectory hodoscopes for use in cosmic-ray instrumentation on balloons and in spacecraft
