Abstract :
The use of IEEE/ANSI Standard 176 in the burgeoning field of nonlinear crystal optics has underscored the desirability of expanding the scope of Std 176 and for rethinking definitions of crystallographic axes abc for the polar orthorhombic class. The authors propose revisions and additions to Std 176, which enhance its conformity with and accommodation to multidiscipline usage, in the hope that this will thereby promote its broader observance.<>
