Abstract :
Spiral CT volumetric imaging, processing, and analysis of lower extremity residua were developed and tested using cylindrical phantom test objects and a cadaver lower extremity. Spiral CT scan examination was performed to generate image volumes that were segmented to estimate volumes of interest. These volumes were compared to physical volume measurements obtained by hydrostatic weighing. Hydrostatic weighing and spiral CT volume determinations were compared to calculated volumes based on measured dimensions of two cylindrical phantoms. Threshold-based segmentation of below-knee residua scanned with spiral CT in air was shown accurate to within 3% compared to hydrostatic and analytically derived volumes of phantom test objects. Volume of interest segmentation methods of spiral CT image data had a standard error of 0.15% for a cadaver leg. The feasibility and validity of spiral CT scanning and segmentation for volumetric studies of lower limb residua were demonstrated
