Abstract :
Software is increasingly being used to control and monitor systems for which safety and reliability are critical. When comparing software designs for such systems, an evaluation of how each design can contribute to the risk of system failure is desirable. Unfortunately, the science of risk assessment of combined hardware and software systems is in its infancy. Risk assessment of combined hardware/software systems is often based on oversimplified assumptions about software behavior.
