Abstract :
Railgun armature contact forces are often treated as a "quasi-static" parameter. The magnetic loading of the armature is treated as time varying, but the structural response is treated statically. In this paper, the authors look at the dynamic response of trailing arm armatures to rail variations caused by surface imperfections and barrel straightness. They use a simple one degree of freedom model to show how armature stiffness affects contact loading.<>
