Abstract :
A new technique to improve analogue optical transmission performance using an optical single-sideband (SSB) system incorporating a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has been proposed. In this experiment, the optical SSB signal, which was injected into an SOA, was distorted and this distorted signal could be recovered to the SSB signal by detuning the RF phase of a modulator. The distortion was increased with the increase of the SOA current and input power in the unsaturated gain region, and the detuning quantity of the RF phase to restore the distorted signal to the SSB signal was also increased. Thus, the RF gain after phase detuning was enhanced with the distortion quantity. In 92 km transmission experiments, the detuned signal does not show any chromatic dispersion effects.
