Abstract :
Failure to recognise the effects of the changed operating conditions and carry out further reinforcement of the network when needed, resulted in the breakdown of the four 110 kV cables supplying the CBD in Auckland. The author discusses the development of Auckland´s CBD in relation to the power supply and soil resistivity effects on underground cables. The sequence of events leading to the failure, and the changes that should be implemented as a result regarding training and management within the power industry, are briefly discussed.
