Abstract
Throughout the 1970s, the United States supplied 45 percent of the major weapons imported by Third World countries and the Soviet Union supplied about 27 percent. During the same decade, however, Western European arms producers began competing seriously for the Third World market, and the arms industries of several Third World countries grew as well.∗
