Abstract :
Making a global impact had been the talk of Ph.D. students Richard Gaster and Drew Hall since they first began working in Prof. Shan Wang´s laboratory at Stanford University. However, building the motivation and making the time to turn theoretical dreaming into a real working product was quite challenging. After learning about the inaugural IEEE Presidents´ Change the World Competition, the duo was inspired to turn one of their ideas into reality. Their entry, NanoLab: A Hand-Held Diagnostic Laboratory, was selected as the winner of the US$10,000 IEEE Student Humanitarian Supreme Prize, the top award in the competition.
