Abstract
No. 500-kV series capacitor systems have been in practice in Japan to date, but trend towards increased capacities of power sources and installation thereof at remote locations will necessitate such systems in the near future. To meet future needs, major pieces of equipment for such systems have been under development for years, and a prototype one-phase module of full-size system was constructed recently for performance test purposes. The test results have shown that development of compact, economical 1000-MVar class 500-kV series capacitor systems meeting 50kA short-circuit, salt contamination and earthquake requirements specific to Japan is possible.
