Abstract :
This editorial is the tenth installment of the design and implementation (D&I) series. The topics in this editorial include: Telefonica Germany´s 2011 deployment of a largescale IMS based telephony system. This article is an industry-oriented discussion published in D&I.It addresses not only the technological aspects of the IMS deployment, but also the business, marketing, and management factors that dominate large-scale engineering projects; and the broadband Internet diffusion modeling and correlation with empirical data across six European countries and the Republic of Korea. This article is a follow-up to an article published in the April 2010 installment of the D&I series. It discusses improvements to the models and their application to a much larger set of empirical data. It is a powerful example of how the unique skills of IEEE communications society members can be used to guide international policies for telecommunications and for the Internet.
