Abstract :
This article describes how Synchronous Ethernet technology provides a solution for transporting synchronization over Ethernet. Synchronous Ethernet uses syntonization/frequency synchronization from the physical layer together with a slow protocol and has been standardized by the ITUT for frequency distribution. This article also describes how Synchronous Ethernet could be extended in order to transport phase/time in addition to frequency; this is referred to as "Time Synchronous Ethernet" (TSE) in this article.
