Abstract :
A successful circuit breaker needs not only a suitable interrupter design but also a suitable medium in which to form and quench the arc. SF6 is increasingly being used in circuit breakers as an alternative to oil and air. The author discusses the implications on switching technology of SF6 use. The author discusses current interruption concepts and then discusses the distinctive properties of SF6. These properties have promoted the evolution of new forms of interrupters which are described by the author. The performance capabilities of the SF6 interrupters are discussed
