Abstract :
We observed how PFPE lubricant film formed to magnetic disk surface using AFM with a fluoride coated probe. We found that PFPE lubricant did not uniformly cover the carbon protective surface but concentrated in valleys of surface roughness. The lubricant film has one to two step structure and the first step height is almost the same as the radius of molecular gyration. After the pin-on-disk test, the lubricant step height and the coverage increased, compared to the initial state
