Communication aids for people with impaired speech and hearing

There are many ways in which human beings communicate with one another. These range from writing a formal letter or delivering a speech, to a `glance across a crowded room¿. Physical disability can cause problems in any or all of these communication means. How can technology assist those people for whom communication by speech is difficult or impossible?
