  • Abstract
    The first attempt at operating a submarine telegraph cable, in 1858, failed because its operators tried to increase its speed by using higher working voltages ¿ the cable failed after four weeks of service. However, more successful attempts were made at increasing operating speed, and this article describes some of those attempts
