Abstract :
Essential services are those that must be maintained against all eventualities. Emergency lighting, switch closing and tripping, instrumentation, mimic diagrams and boiler-house auxiliars are some of the important functions for which a supply must always be available. To meet these requirements, a battery can be used as the standby source of supply. Although voltages and currents quoted in this article are based on using lead-acid batteries, other types, including nickel cadmium, can be catered for
