Abstract :
A novel approach is proposed for contingency selection, which causes the contingencies that cause the worst voltage problems to be chosen. An adaptive pre-filter is designed that can filter out a large portion of noncritical contingency cases at very little cost. The output of the pre-filter is thus an already shortened list of contingency cases which can then be fed into any conventional contingency selection program. The filter is automatically updated to reflect changes in the power system. This combination of the pre-filter with a contingency selection program is significantly faster than the selection program alone. Test results reported here show that the proposed approach is reliable and efficient
