Abstract :
The gain and noise properties of dual-stage gain flattened erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA) are analysed. Simple expressions are derived to aid the design and understanding of the dual-stage EDFAs. Simulation is also carried out to determine the behaviour of EDFAs when subject to different operating parameters. It is found that a dual-stage EDFA incorporating an equalisation filter, variable attenuator and gain control makes it ideal for use as an on-line optical amplifier in WDM networks
