Because of its physical properties silicon is, and probably always will be, the most important semiconducting material. The high-temperature performance and electron mobility of GaAs has obtained a definite position in the marketplace, and the optical and electrical properties of the III¿V compounds such as GaInAs are likely to become increasingly important
