Abstract
In this paper, a new power control method for mobile radio channels is proposed and evaluated. Power adjustment is done through the joint knowledge of signal strength and signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). This new power control mechanism greatly reduces the likelihood of positive feedback, as well as providing enhanced system capacities. Study of this combined scheme further motivates the proposal of an adaptive power control scheme, implemented through adjustable thresholds at base stations. This scheme would reduce the overhead in transmitting power control commands to mobile units and also simplify the design of handsets
