Major developments of commercial fuel cells are taking place in the USA and Japan. Alkaline fuel cells are now established for many applications, and multi-megawatt plants based on phosphoric-acid fuel-cell technology are well advanced for commercialisation early in the next decade. Laboratory prototypes of molten carbonate and solid oxide cell systems are being vigorously developed
