Abstract
An efficient means of generating frequency-modulated narrowband signals whose spectra have a characteristic line shape and width is discussed from the standpoint of modeling and simulation. A repertoire of functions which can serve as useful prototypes for line spectral profiles is provided. Five profiles are presented as isolated examples, unrelated to one another as members of a more general family. Further profiles, of intermediate shape, can usually be found on an ad hoc basis
