  • Abstract
Sustainability is important because the earth desperately needs examples of enterprises that can meet the needs of human society without asking nature to pick up the tab. Energy in its purest form is sunlight, not a source of pollution but the giver of life. The challenge is to condense, shape, store, and transmit all the energy for human needs in a form as ubiquitous and benign as sunlight. In short, ultimately we have to kick the fossil-fuel habit. Electricity is the most versatile and widely used form of energy, the closest thing to sunlight. Therefore, a transformation in how electricity is made and used, from unsustainable to sustainable, will have a ripple effect through every factory, home, and office to which it flows. BC Hydro is on the path to sustainability and wants to lead the way for the unsustainable society in which it serves to also become sustainable. This article discusses BC Hydro´s generation mix portfolio and planned additions. The portfolio is overwhelmingly renewable.
