Abstract :
The authors report the first 980 nm pumped 1.5 μm optical amplifiers and lasers in z-cut Er-indiffused MgO:LiNbO3. Using a ZnO indiffused waveguide, these devices show greatly reduced photorefractive damage and stable amplification (0.86 dB/cm gain at 60 mW pump) and lasing (38 μW output power at 70 mW pump). Low threshold pump powers of 12 and 30 mW are obtained for the amplifier and the laser, respectively
